Fifteen minutes later, Josh pushed the board, sliding it into the back of the minivan. The wheels lined up with the height of the tailgate, so he didn’t need help doing it. Which was good, because he was watching Jim’s beat up truck drive down the road. The man hadn’t even stopped to say goodbye.

Josh was happy to let him go, as the spooky vibe was almost instantly lifted. Now all he needed to do was find a place to get something to eat, and a hotel so he could sleep away the rest of the morning. He was going to be driving eleven hours with a frozen body in one of the hottest Mays he could remember. He thought he should be as fresh as possible.

Drive straight home, he thought. You will be fine.

He shook his head, thinking sleep was a safer idea.

He got in the van and grabbed his phone. He opened the browser, then hesitated. He was about to type, “how long does it take a frozen body to thaw?” He didn’t want to end up on a government watch list. Rethinking, he typed, “how long does it take a frozen turkey to thaw?” Sweet.

The answer which came up was approximately twenty-four hours per five pounds. That satisfied him. He really didn’t want to be sitting in a pool of putrid corpse water when he pulled into the Home parking lot. It would likely take days for something as large as a human body to fully thaw.

He tossed the phone onto the passenger’s seat and slid behind the wheel, satisfied that he would have enough time to get some sleep before heading to Osprey. He pulled out of the parking lot, leaving the Big Bear Hotel behind him.

When he braked to look for oncoming traffic — laughably unnecessary here in the middle of the wilderness of Hawk Junction — the body slid forward, bumping into the back of his chair.

Josh flinched. For the first time since he was a kid, he dreaded being alone with a dead body.
